What is Medicare?

Medicare is a national insurance program that covers people over 65 who have certain disabilities and end-stage renal disease (kidney impairment).

Medicare’s history dates back to 1965 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law a bill that allowed eligible citizens to get the federal government health coverage they required. The coverage was initially limited to Section A, Section B.

Over the years, coverage has expanded to include more people. Now, over 50 million people are on Medicare. Original Medicare Parts A and C will cover 80% of your expenses. However, you can purchase supplemental policies to help with 20%

What Parts of Medicare Do You Need?

Is Medicare your only coverage? If so, you’ll need Parts A and B. You must have both Parts A and B to be eligible for either a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Supplement plan.

Most beneficiaries need Part D, too. But some folks may not need it because they have other drug coverage.
